How to Print Targets at Actual Size
Your printer quietly rescales most PDFs. If the grid on your target is not exactly one inch, every correction you dial is wrong. Here is how to check in thirty seconds.

There is a failure mode in printable targets that almost nobody talks about, and it invalidates the entire afternoon.
You download a target. You print it. The grid says one inch. You shoot a group, measure two inches left, look up the correction, dial it, and the impact does not move where it should. You blame the scope, the ammunition, or yourself.
The problem is usually that the grid is not one inch.
What your printer is doing
Most print dialogs default to a scaling option with a name like Fit to Page, Shrink to Printable Area, or Scale to Fit. It exists for a good reason. A PDF built edge to edge will clip on a printer that cannot print to the paper edge, so the software shrinks the whole page by a few percent to make everything fit.
A few percent is invisible on a letter. On a measurement tool it is fatal.
At 97 percent scale, a one inch grid square measures 0.97 inches. Your two inch miss is really 2.06 inches. At 100 yards with a quarter MOA turret that is a difference of roughly a quarter of a click, which you will not notice. Push it out to 400 yards, or stack it with a fine-division close range sheet, and it starts to matter.
The deeper problem is that you do not know it happened.
The settings that matter
In any print dialog, find the scaling control and set it to one of these:
- 100%
- Actual Size
- None
- Custom Scale: 100
Different applications name it differently. Adobe Acrobat calls it Actual Size. Preview on macOS calls it Scale 100%. Chrome's built-in PDF viewer hides it under More settings → Scale → Default, and Default is not always 100 — check the Custom option and type 100.
Also confirm:
- Paper size matches the file. A US Letter file sent to an A4 tray will be rescaled no matter what you set. Print the Letter file on Letter, the A4 file on A4.
- Orientation is portrait.
- Borderless is off. Borderless printing scales the image up slightly to guarantee bleed. That is the same problem in the other direction.
Verify it, do not trust it
Settings lie. Drivers override. The only thing worth believing is a ruler.
This is why every sheet in the Precision Zero Pack carries a print check bar across the top: a measured 4 inch rule with quarter inch ticks. Print one sheet, lay a tape across the bar, and read it.
- Reads exactly 4 inches: your scale is right, and the grid under it is true.
- Reads 3 and 7/8: you are at about 97 percent. Fix the setting and reprint.
- Reads anything else: do not shoot it as a measurement tool.
Thirty seconds at the desk, or an afternoon of chasing a zero that was never wrong. Any target you buy or download should give you a way to make that check. If it does not, measure a known grid span yourself before you use it for corrections.
If your printer simply will not do 100 percent
Some cheap printers have a hard non-printable margin and will refuse. Two options that both work:
1. Print at 100 percent and accept clipped edges. The grid and the aiming point sit inside the safe area on any well-designed sheet. Losing a few millimetres of footer costs you nothing. 2. Use the A4 file on Letter paper, or the Letter file on A4, at 100 percent. The smaller page fits inside the larger one with a white border, and the grid stays true because you did not scale it. You lose a little sheet area, not accuracy.
What does not work is scaling to fit and hoping.
The one line to remember
A target is a measuring instrument. An instrument you have not verified is a guess with a grid printed on it.
